Centro San Bernardo Research Center (CSB) is an authorized facility specialized in the use of the SPF rabbit as an animal model for biomedical and pharmaceutical research.

We support pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, universities, research institutes and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) requiring a controlled environment aligned with applicable regulations to conduct studies and experimental work.

Our approach is based on scientific rigor, regulatory compliance and animal welfare, enabling reliable and reproducible research outcomes.

What We do?

CSB provides specialized services related to SPF rabbits in research:

  • SPF rabbit breeding and maintenance under controlled sanitary conditions.
  • Animal housing and handling for research activities.
  • Experimental work in rabbits within authorized facilities (high level description).
  • Technical and operational support for research projects.
  • Applied training and support for research teams.

SPF rabbits in research

The SPF rabbit (Specific Pathogen Free) is widely used in biomedical and pharmaceutical research due to its physiological characteristics and the ability to work under controlled sanitary conditions. Using SPF animals helps reduce uncontrolled variables, improves reproducibility and supports
regulatory expectations in preclinical research.

Quality and regulatory compliance

All CSB activities are conducted in accordance with the applicable European and Spanish legal
framework for the protection of animals used for scientific purposes, including Directive 2010/63/EU
and its implementation in Spain (Royal Decree 53/2013). CSB applies the 3Rs principle (Replacement,
Reduction and Refinement) and works with standardized procedures focused on animal welfare and
scientific quality.
